2 January.

Lee Jae Myung, the main opposition leader in the South Korean parliament, is stabbed in the throat during a press conference.

At Japan’s Haneda airport, an Airbus A 350 passenger plane collided with a Japanese coast guard plane as it landed. 5 members of the crew of the Japanese coast guard plane were killed. No one died on the other plane, but 380 people were evacuated.

Ethiopia signed an agreement with Somalia on access to the Red Sea. The agreement requires Ethiopia to recognise Somalia.

2023 General elections were held in the Marshall Islands. Hilda HEİNE is re-elected President.

3 January.

In Kerman, Iran, 91 people were killed in two back-to-back explosions during ceremonies commemorating Qassem Suleimani. ISIS is the only organisation to claim responsibility.

4 January.

German TV actor Christian Oliver and his two daughters died in a plane crash. Christian Oliver was born in 1972.

5 January.

Brazilian football coach and player Mário Jorge Lobo Zagallo died. Mario Zagallo was born in 1931. He was the first player to win a FIFA World Cup as a player, coach (1970) and assistant coach (1994).

7 January.

General elections are held in Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasine Wajid won 222 of the 500 seats and the Bangladesh Awami League came to power.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards were presented. The awards were presented at the Beverly Hills.

José Adolfo Macías Villama, leader of the Los Choneros organisation, escaped from prison in Ecuador. A 2-month state of emergency was declared throughout the country.

12 January.

The United States and the United Kingdom launch air strikes in response to Yemeni Houthi attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea.

14 January.

The Danish king has changed. King Margrethe II abdicates at the age of 52. Her eldest son, Frederick X, becomes the new King of Denmark.

16 January.

Iran has launched air strikes on parts of Pakistan. It was announced that the main purpose of the attack was against the Jaish organisation and not against Pakistani sovereignty.

18 January.

On 16 January, in retaliation for Iranian air strikes, Pakistan launched air strikes against the Baluchistan Liberation Organisation on the Iranian border.

19 January.

Japan announced that its Slim spacecraft had landed on the lunar surface. Japan became the 5th country to land on the lunar surface.

24 January.

The Korochansky plane crash killed 65 Ukrainian POWs, 6 crew members and 3 guards. It is established that the plane crashed on the border with Ukraine.
