There are too many salt hills and accumulations in the region. The locals of this region consider salt as valuable as gold. Danakil depression was formed as a result of the activities of three tectonic plates in the region.

Danakil desert is 100 metres below sea level. Every year only 100-150 mm of precipitation falls per square metre.

Despite the extremely terrible climatic conditions of this region, the tribe, also known as Afar, which has adapted to the terrain conditions, lives here. The Afar people do not look very favourably on outsiders and have adopted this place. So you can understand that they are not very hospitable.

Until the years of the Second World War, they were killing those who entered this region without permission with various tortures. Moreover, it is rumoured that some victims were castrated. It is known that adrenaline-loving tourists and visitors to this region are accompanied by hired military squads.

Afar people make their living by extracting salt under the heat. They load this salt into camel caravans and sell it in nearby cities. Their approximate earnings are around 7 dollars per day, albeit small.

There are some water pools with acid content in the small pit formations in the region. These interesting shapes attract people, but if you are travelling there, we recommend that you do not even touch the water pools. Burns can cause serious damage. It would be good to coincide your visit with May and September. Because the air temperature is cooler in these months.

This region is home to a volcano called Erta Ale. This volcano is one of the most valuable places in the region. There is not much animal life in this region.
