When they pay attention to a person or sometimes when they perceive a different sound in their environment, dogs tilt their heads to the side, which is just one of the reasons that make dogs cute and sweet.
Scientific studies on the strange behavior of dogs lead us to the possibility that our canine companions tilt their heads to the side to better see or hear humans, or to associate what they hear with data in their consciousness.
Do dogs understand our facial expressions?
Dogs, our faithful friends, are highly skilled and successful at understanding the shape and mimic movements of people’s faces. However, dogs with long nasal projections may find it difficult to perceive and recognise human facial expressions and gestures.
A study of around 600 breeds of dogs with different nose shapes found that, on average, around 70 per cent of dogs with medium to long noses often tilted their heads to the side. Although scientific analysis suggests that this movement is related to better peripheral vision, the fact that around 50% of dogs with shorter noses or flatter facial shapes also tilted their heads in the same situations suggests that there may be other reasons for this movement.
Is sound perception effective in dogs in the process of strange behaviour of dogs?
Our loyal friends, dogs, have a more sensitive ear structure than humans and can hear sounds across a wide range of frequencies. However, they are not as intuitive and successful as humans in determining the centre and source of these sounds. Experts believe that dogs often tilt their heads to the side when paying attention to determine where the sound they hear is coming from.
The relationship between carrying and head tilt in dogs
By tilting their heads to the side, dogs’ external auditory canals become more active, allowing them to detect where sounds are coming from and locate their source. A study conducted in recent years has linked the head-tilting behaviour of our canine companions to their efforts to understand human speech.
In the study, dogs were compared to breeds that were given commands by their owners to retrieve objects in another room. Dogs with super comprehension skills, who were able to remember the names of more than 10 items, tilted their heads to the side for 43% of the commands given, while other less skilled dogs only tilted their heads to the side for 2% of the commands.
The scientists, who analysed the results of all these studies, believe that the head tilting behaviour can be interpreted as the dogs paying attention to understand the spoken words and commands, or matching what they hear with visual elements stored in their memory. Another finding of this study was that, similar to the ability to use the right or left hand in humans, dogs always tilt their head in the same direction.
