People who have polio often have severe respiratory problems. People who have polio and later recover can still have serious problems years later.

Polio is often thought of as a “children’s disease”. This is because, in our time, it affects children under the age of five. But when we look at cases over the years, we see that it also affects adults, although rarely. Franklin D. Roosevelt, for example, contracted polio at the age of 39.

What Are The Symptoms Of Polio?

Another question about polio is the first symptoms of the disease. At first it may look like a simple flu. It manifests itself as sore throat, high fever, tiredness, nausea, headache and abdominal pain. As the disease progresses in the body, numbness, weakness and tingling in the legs begins. In advanced cases, meningitis, an inflammation of the tissues that protect the brain and spinal cord, can occur.

Polio was once a regional virus. The first major polio outbreak in the US occurred in 1894 in the Vermont region. The outbreak paralysed more than 100 people and killed 18. Doctors were unable to identify the disease for a long time.

The polio virus was discovered in 1908 by Ivar Wickman, a Swedish doctor. Researcher Jonas Salk developed a vaccine to prevent polio, saving many lives around the world. He first tested the vaccine on himself and his family in 1954. In the 1950s, there were more than 50,000 cases of polio each year, but with the use of the vaccine, this number dropped to an average of 100 per year.

In 1963, Albert Sabin’s newly developed oral polio vaccine was tested and approved for use in the United States. Doctors administered this vaccine to children by dropping it into a sugar cube.This vaccine, which was both easy to administer and effective, was used around the world until the 2000s. Thanks to these two vaccines, polio was eradicated from North and South America.

Are There Any Countries Still Affected By Polio?

Unfortunately, the disease has not been completely eradicated. Polio cases still occur in countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan, where access to vaccines is difficult. Tourists also carry the virus. However, some parents still refuse to vaccinate their children against polio because they are still anti-vaccination.

They regret it afterwards, of course, but what’s the point? In July last year, a man in New York City who had not been vaccinated as a child contracted polio and was left paralysed.

A study has shown that not everyone who is infected with the virus will have a serious illness. Most people with the disease have no symptoms. Twenty-five per cent of those infected recovered after a week of flu-like symptoms. However, between 1 and 5 out of every 100 cases will develop serious symptoms such as meningitis. Unfortunately, experts have seen paralysis in 1 in 200 cases, depending on the type of virus.

Is There Any Treatment For Polio?

Unfortunately, the saddest news about this disease is that there is no treatment. Scientists who have studied the virus for years have not found a cure. The most effective way to prevent this disease is through vaccination. The most effective way to protect against this incurable disease is, of course, vaccination. The most effective vaccine is the polio vaccine developed in 1955. 90% effective.

This is the only vaccine used in the USA since 2000. If you want to go to school in the USA, you must have this vaccine. If you have not been vaccinated against polio for any reason, you can get up to three doses with no age limit. Turkey last recorded a case of polio in 1998. It was certified polio-free by the World Health Organization in 2002.
