Blood Type And Stroke Risk . Does blood type affect stroke risk?
Researchers have found that people with type A blood are more likely to have a stroke before the age of 60 than people with other blood types.
Blood groups show the rich variety of chemicals found on the outer surface of our red blood cells, or platelets. These are known as group AB and separately as group A-B or group O. Scientific genetic research has now identified a clear link between the gene for subgroup A1 and early stroke.

Scientists pooled the results of dozens of genetic studies involving more than 10,000 people with stroke and more than 500,000 people without stroke. The participants were aged between 18 and 60. A scientific review at the genetic level revealed two issues that were strongly associated with an earlier risk of stroke. One of these coincided with the issue of blood group genes.
Zero Blood Type and Stroke

People with the gene for blood type O (zero) appear to have a 12 percent lower risk.
However, the researchers stress that the risk of additional strokes in people with the blood type A gene is low, so there is no need for additional consideration or screening in this group.
“We still don’t know why blood type A confers a higher risk,” says neurologist Steven Kittner, senior researcher at the University of Maryland, USA, “but it may have something to do with other circulating proteins involved in the development of blood clots, such as platelets, the red blood cells that line the blood vessels.”
Stroke-Related Study Results

Although the results of the study seem worrying, this blood group may prevent early risk of stroke.
Hundreds of thousands of people in the US and around the world have a stroke every year. In most cases, about 75 out of 100 occur in people over the age of 65, and the risk doubles every 10 years after the age of 55.
The people in these studies live in Japan, Pakistan, North America, Europe and Australia. Only a third of the participants were of non-European origin.
“We still need to carry out further experiments and studies to clarify the mechanisms behind the increase in the risk of stroke over the past few years,” says researcher Kittner.
The researchers found another important finding in the analysis. This was found when comparing people who had a stroke before the age of 60 with those who had a stroke after the age of 60.

The researchers analysed a group of about 9,000 people over 60 who had had a stroke and a control group of about 20,000 people over 60 who had not had a stroke.
They found that the increased risk of stroke in group A blood types was not significant in the late-onset stroke group. This suggests that strokes that occur early in life may have a different mechanism than strokes that occur later in life.
The researchers say that strokes in non-elderly people are less likely to be caused by an excess of fatty deposits in the arteries (a process called atherosclerosis) and more likely to be caused by factors related to clot formation. Of course, the mechanism of high blood pressure should not be ignored.
The study also found that people with type B blood were 11 per cent more likely to have a stroke than those without, regardless of age.
